If you love history and would like to understand what made Flanders great this book will make you feel proud to be Flemish
The Lion of Flanders is one of the great novels out there, based on historical facts with some artistic licence on the facts and people, this novel will sweep you away the times of yore to the beginning of the 14th century filled with great battles,Knights and their fair ladies, although a translation of book is never as good as the original, the spirit of the book is still there. I must note that this book moved the hearts and spirits of many generations of my people including myself, though I feel that it's messages of freedom and defiance against tyranny will speak to all that read this great book. Hendrik Conscience is one of Flanders great authors who was able to capture the spirit of his people that yearn of freedom in book, that even today holds a prominent place in the heart of the Flemish people. I know that when you will read this book you will be swept away by the story and you will gain a love for adventure, a taste of freedom, and love for a people that stood up against tyranny and said "no, we will never give up and disappear quietly in the night" .
Very interesting book. It's historical and should interest any one that loves history.
