The stories in this book are all true. Its author has been held up at gunpoint at night on a road in Guatemala and shot with a machine gun in the chest and shoulder in Vietnam. He's come close to dying of thirst in the Sahara and freezing to death in the Himalayas. He's contracted malaria and typhoid fever in Ethiopia and hepatitis in India. There have been accidents involving motorcycles and automobiles. He's had close calls involving lions (twice), elephants (three times) and a rhino (once). He's visited over a hundred countries, seen revolutions, famines, wars, and panty raids, feasted in palaces and fasted in caves. He's discovered paradises, been saved by dolphins, hopped freight trains, danced with an 108-year-old woman, swam with sharks, frequented whore houses and opium dens, and met a man capable of revealing God.

In the pages of this book you'll meet the queen of the Ecuadorian prison system, the Dalai Lama, Dick Cheney, a swami from Katmandu who makes his living picking up large stones with his penis, yak herders, tunnel rats, 300 pound go-go girls, deep sea divers, drug dealers, stock car drivers, Indonesian princes, Bolivian miners, beanheads, powder monkeys, hookers and saints. Between the stories the author gives advice to would-be travelers, describes six tropical paradises where you can live comfortably on five hundred dollars a month, and includes his personal lists of the best things in the world. Mr. Linnemeier hails from the Hoosier state. Today he treads the path of moderation, living contentedly in a small town, surrounded by friends and family. He claims to have abandoned most of his previous vices, and has the stated aim of dying peacefully in bed at ninety five. In his own words, "I'm not the kind of person that men automatically defer to. I don't usually make women's hearts beat faster when they see me across a crowded room."

I came across an article by the author on a travel blog, in which he expands on the six tropical paradises that you can live for $500/month. I saw the book and the great reviews and swiftly ordered a copy.

It's a great, breezy autobiographical collection of vignettes, usually between one and five pages long, on different topics, some repeating like 'Advice to Travelers,' and 'I Remember,' and other one-off stories like 'Impeccable Gentleman' and 'Cyclone Tracy.'

I tend to have a hard time reading books that don't immediately pull me in, and had no trouble with this one. The episodic quality really worked for me. I also appreciated the attentiveness that went into the editing. Having read other self-published books, I was impressed with the scarcity of errors.

The author comes across as a thoughtful, sincere and modest man. I liked him; he seems grateful for the lessons and blessings he's been afforded, and I sense he'd like to contribute in kind.

One small criticism: the 'Six Tropical Paradises,' are given only brief mention, and available in more fleshed out form online. The prominence of this section in the subtitle led me to believe there was a more substantial accounting of these locales, like I might find in 'World's Cheapest Destinations.' This is not the case. Were the writing not so compelling, and stories less engaging, I might have been angry about this. As it stands, though, it provided the hook for me to get pulled in, and I'm glad I did.

Overall, a great and inspiring read. If you're hoping to get a sense of what's possible, of the greatness and bigness of the world, and the opportunities we might have to explore it, go on and check this one out.

Great book truely inspiring
Reading John Linnemeier's book "How an Average Man Lived an Adventurous Life", it is quickly obvious that John Linnemeier is anything but average! As I read this book, I feel as if I am trekking around the world with a truly extraordinary traveling companion. John inspires me to take a risk, get off the beaten path, and live my life outside the boundaries of my comfort zone. He also motivates me to pay more attention to the experiences and stories of my own life. This book is a gift that enriches my life! Thank you, John Linnemeier!
I enjoyed reading about the many interesting adventures this fellow enjoyed. What an interesting life he has had. The book was well written and I like the way it was organized. Easy, entertaining, and enjoyable reading!
If one expression could sum up this book it would be 'carpe diem'. This book is a complete revelation and unlike any travel narrative you're likely to read. It's delightfully eccentric in its format and more of a thumbnail autobiography than a travel book. I truly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. I found it quite moving, humorous, informative, philosophical and life affirming.Thoroughly recommended.I wish the author would write more. In a strange and quirky way it could be a companion piece to Walden Pond.
Interesting stories, but they are very short (mostly one and a half to two pages long) and often seem incomplete. You also get the sense that the author is pretty impressed with himself.
Excellent. Inspiring. Packing now... In all seriousness, a great read about a man who took action instead of falling into a rut. Worth your money.
This author has "Seen the Elephant" on multiple occasions, has sat on it, been kicked by it, and then survived to tell us how it all felt. As a combat veteran of RVN & Cambodia (69'-70') with over 1,000 hours of intense low-level combat as an aero-scout gunner, and having spent a few days with the man, I can honestly say that when he speaks my finely-tuned BS antennae do not quiver a bit. He's the real deal, and he is blessed with an ability to speak (and write) words which convey to us so much of the truth of his subject that you can almost hear, taste, and feel what you are visualizing. This book is worth many times what he is asking for it, and we should all feel privileged to hear his sacred tales at any price. John, my friend, thank you for this wonderful gift! MJL
